Interactive steel section library

A comprehensive database of geometric and mechanical properties for standard structural steel sections, including IPE, HEA, HEB and HEM profiles (EN 10025), circular hollow sections CHS (EN 10210 and EN 10219), rectangular RHS and square SHS hollow sections (EN 10210 and EN 10219), and equal-leg angles (EN 10056). For each profile, the following properties are provided: cross-sectional area A, height h, width b, flange and web thicknesses tf and tw, second moments of area Iy and Iz, elastic section moduli Wel, plastic section moduli Wpl, radii of gyration iy and iz, torsional constant It, and warping constant Iw.

Use the search field to quickly find a section by designation (e.g. “IPE 300”, “HE 200 A”, “CHS 168.3”) or browse the tables by size. Click the last icon in each row to display a dimensioned cross-section drawing, ready to include in a calculation report. Data is extracted directly from EN standard tables and is compatible with Eurocode 3 verification tools available on CalcoloStrutturaleMDP.

Second moments of area Iy and Iz
Iy refers to the strong axis (y-axis, in the plane with the larger dimension) and Iz to the weak axis. They determine flexural stiffness and are used directly in EC3 resistance and stability checks.

Elastic Wel and plastic Wpl section moduli
Wel = I/ymax is the elastic modulus (used for Class 3 sections). Wpl = Ssup + Sinf is the plastic modulus, sum of the static moments of the upper and lower halves about the plastic neutral axis (used for Class 1 and 2 sections). The ratio Wpl/Wel = αpl is the shape factor.

Torsional constant It and warping constant Iw
It is the St. Venant torsional constant: it measures the basic torsional stiffness of the section. Iw is the warping constant: it quantifies the warping contribution in non-uniform torsion, becoming significant in the presence of a torsion gradient and producing resistive effects when warping is restrained.

Radii of gyration iy and iz
The radius of gyration i = √(I/A) expresses the distribution of area about the relevant axis. It is used to calculate the slenderness λ = Lcr/i in buckling checks.
